She hiccupped softly, but didn’t move besides that. She couldn’t see his face and didn’t want to. She hadn’t meant to fall apart, but her suspicion had been confirmed by what he’d said…Their love was falling apart. She had doubted him and he had returned the favor.

“I didn’t betray you,” she whispered hoarsely.

“I believe you.” She wasn’t convinced and he sensed that. “I really do. I don’t know why I ever thought you did.”

“I gave you no reason to doubt it. I’m never home anymore.”

“I’m never home at all.”

“It doesn’t matter. We should always be aware of one another. Things should never come to this, again. I know there’ll be good and bad moments, but let’s not let it get this bad again. What do you say? Let’s start over, okay?” He closed his eyes and held her closer.

“Yeah. I just want to start over with you. All over, again.” She clung to the fabric of his jacket and took shuddering breaths, inhaling the deep scent of his masculinity.

“We can start over again. I’ll forget it all; a clean slate.” He rubbed her back in slow, calming circles.

“A clean slate would be nice…for both of us.”

“There’s nothing else I want more.”
