She danced against his chest, closer than they were when they began. They held a basic conversation, nothing too personal but casual enough for the occasion. She didn’t see his eyes scanning her face, taking in the graceful lines and beauty marks.

She’d put on a little extra make up for the occasion and it didn’t go unnoticed. Although, he personally preferred her with a clean face. He’d take her either way.

She moved a little closer, away from the partying masses and closer to his cool, calm countenance. He didn’t seem to mind so, she laid her head against his chest. A big step, but he didn’t miss a beat and wrapped an arm around her, surprised to feel how slender she was.

He could smell gardenias in her hair as though she’d washed it in sweet water. The errant strands brushed his jaw and he filed the sensation away for another time. He nudged her closer, reveling in the way she fit against his body.

She unconsciously sunk her fingertips into his shoulder possessively and squeezed his hand in hers. She didn’t want to let go. He was hers. For this moment, he belonged to her and she belonged in his arms.

Even as one song became two, and then three, she didn’t relinquish her hold. His hands stroked her lower back, but strayed momentarily into her dangling hair. She sighed and smiled against his neck as she heard him breathe her in. He was in love, too.

If not with her, he was in love with the feeling of her against him. He surely could sense her lungs contracting in her chest and was close enough to reach inside her to touch her beating heart, which raced unsteadily alongside his own. They were living in unison, in synchrony, in tandem.

“Love is that which none shall ever tear asunder.” The words were surprising and not entirely unfitting.

“What does that mean?”

“Love in all its forms shall never truly be destroyed.”

She pulled back to look into his eyes. “And what form is this?”

“The greatest of them all.” He bowed his head closer to hers. “A love worth living for.”
