Title: The Past Is The Story

Spoilers: No idea. I’ve never seen a single episode. I just wrote this because someone started telling me about the show and it piqued my interest.

Summary: On his deathbed, Blake looks back on his life and reflects on where it really went wrong. Alexis overhears and puts in her two cents.

Author’s Notes: I love Alexis and Blake together.

Disclaimer: Dynasty belongs to Aaron Spelling, I think.

Blake lay hooked up to a dozen machines that were keeping him alive. None of his children were there; he had had Crystal send them home hours ago. He didn’t want them here for this.

He’d been sick for ten years, though it had gotten worse in the last two. It was Multiple Sclerosis. It had started with a tremor in his hands and twinges and had become a full-blown memory lapse before Crystal finally demanded that he see a doctor. He’d stalled for so long, because he honestly hadn’t wanted to know what was wrong with him. Ignorance is bliss.

It had all been downhill from that doctor’s visit. With the knowledge of his disease came the tension and with that came anger. He tried to push Crystal away, but she wouldn’t go. She’d been there for too long to leave now. And after ten years of battling, they’d come to this. He was dying and he barely even recognized her. She was there every day, but still he barely even noticed. She didn’t care; she loved him anyway. She wasn’t the only one.

He opened his eyes a little from his restless sleep and looked at the bleary figure sitting at the end of his bed…He thought he saw Alexis.

“Alexis.” Crystal took his hand and nodded. She was glad that he was talking at all. “Alexis, I’m so glad to see you. I’ve missed you so much.” She brought his hand to her lips and kissed his knuckles.

“I’ve missed you too, darling.”

“I have so much left to say to you.” Her eyes were bright with tears.

“You don’t have to.” He nodded sluggishly.

“I have so much to say.”

“I’m listening.” He swallowed dryly and licked his lips.

“Do you remember when you were in the hospital and you called me?” Crystal nodded even though she couldn’t for the life of her recall what he was talking about.

“Yes, I remember.”

“You called and said that you needed me. Do you remember what you said to me?” Crystal remained silent. “Of course you remember. I said, Is important? As though you’d admit to needing me under any other circumstances. You were crying. I remember that. Alexis, I knew what had happened to you. I knew you had lost the baby. I knew. I just didn’t want to hear about it. I knew, Alexis, I knew and I’m so sorry.”

“I know you’re sorry,” whispered Alexis from her place in the doorway. She’d come to see him, to pay her respects, as it were. Though, what respect of hers he’d earned was anyone’s guess.

“I was supposed to be there for you. Maybe, if I’d spent more time at home and you hadn’t had to spend so much time worrying about me, we’d still have the baby, all of them.” Alexis came all the way in and stopped at Blake’s side.

“Maybe, but we wouldn’t have been as wealthy.”

“We would have still been wealthy, it just would have taken longer. But we’d have been together.”

“Maybe so. But what can you do?”

“I can apologize.” She pressed her finger to his lips.

“Don’t.”

“I’m so sorry for the baby. I was so mad at myself. If I’d only been better for you…”

“Oh no, Blake, don’t. You did what you thought you were supposed to do. You provided for your family.”

“I let our baby die.”

“That was not your fault…That was my fault.”

“No, Alexis.”

“Yes, it was my job to give you healthy children and…I failed.”

“Oh no. You gave me four of the most beautiful children God has ever made. Thank you so much.” She stroked his cheek.

“It was nothing.”

“I mean it, Alexis. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Why’d you come?”

“I had to see you.”

“Why“

“Because I wanted to see if it was really true. I wanted to know if the great Blake Carrington was really dying. I didn’t want to believe it.”

“It’s true.”

“I know that now.”

“I don’t want to go.”

“I don’t want you to.”

“I’ve missed you.”

“I know.”

“I never really wanted you to go.”

“I never really wanted to leave.”

“I still love you. You’re the only one I’ve ever really loved.”

“Me too.” Crystal sat still and closed her eyes, pretending that she couldn’t hear anything they were saying. She’d been there over the years through his illness and still it was Alexis he loved. The game was over and Alexis had won. She always had.

“I’m dying, Alexis.”

“I know, darling.”

“It hurts.”

“I know. You don’t have to hurt anymore. I’m here.”

“You’ll stay?”

“I’ll stay for as long as you need me.”

“I’ll always need you.”

“Go to sleep.”

“But--”

“Shh. Go to sleep.” She put down her purse and slid into the bed behind Blake, resting his head onto her chest. “Go to sleep. I’m here. I’m here.”

“I’m so tired.”

“Shh.” He closed his eyes and breathed her in one final time.

She was all he’d ever wanted and he’d waited for her, until the last minute.

“ I love you, too, Blake. Now and forever.”

Crystal stood up and straightened her clothes.

“Well, Alexis, you’ve won again.” Alexis stroked Blake’s still-silky hair. It shined silver in the dank light.

“No, Crystal, we’ve both lost. Just like always.” Because she’d never gotten him back, but Crystal had never had him.

They’d both lost.
