“I knew you way back when. When you were younger, sweeter, even a little more naïve. You didn’t know that the world was that ugly on the outside. You didn’t know that pain came in handsome packages. I brought it to you. We spent time together, loved each other, made a son. We were torn apart, by that same thing that you had never expected and I had always dreaded.”

“I spent my years hiding from it. Praying that all had been well, but it hadn’t. I spent two decades living beside you and watching you be someone completely different from who I had known. You lived desperately, whether or not you knew it. You were desperate to forget the unforgettable. And I was desperate to make you remember. Eventually, I wore you down or maybe you simply forgot to fight. But then, you came back. The funny, content, smiling you. You were seldom carefree, but I thought I made you happy. Even now, I think I did.”

“We’d wasted so much time that by the time we were together, there wasn’t much left. But what we did have cherished and made the best of. We had our beautiful twins, loved our son, and found peace in one another. Neither of us were perfect, but we found our redemption together.”

“I found forgiveness in you. Life in you. Heart in you. From day one, we’ve shared a soul. And even now we do. Now my soul is incomplete and will be until again we meet. I don’t know much about what will become of me after this, but I do know that out of every person in the lives we’ve led, shared and alone, I knew you best.”

“I read the writing on your soul and listened to the sounds of your spirit. I knew the memories behind the sadness in your eyes and the joy you found in living. I knew the secrets that you lay with, because I lay with them, too. I knew the demons that haunted you to the day you died, the serenity you found in laughter. I pray that that serenity followed you to wherever you are.”

“And wherever that is, I know that you are the most beautiful angel in heaven.”

“I’ll miss you every day and love you ever twice that.”

“Until we meet again, darling. Until we meet again.”

“But until then, goodbye.”

I love you so much.
