She inhaled deeply and the let the world in. She had kept herself under lock
and key for too long; she’d forgotten how it all tasted. Air had a smoggy tang that was alive with cigarette smoke and
the breath of others. The remains of her wine hadn’t quite turned bitter on her tongue and it turned out that dinner
was, in fact, bland. She’d fire the caterers in the morning. Food without flavor reminded her of life without meaning.
It was too close to who she’d been before. Flavorless.
She opened her graceful hands and held air.
