Summary: Amber doesn’t get on the bus and House doesn’t come home.
~!~
Amber
followed the bus .
She’d
paid the bill at the bar and snagged his abandoned cane on the way out the door. He
was already taking his seat when she came out the front door. For a second she
considered following him but she didn’t want to leave her car behind. Princeton
was a good town but not that good.
She
followed the bus down the street and watched him through the rear window. House
was staring straight ahead. He was strangely lucid for a drunk man, eyes roving
over strangers, probably decoding their secrets like the idiot savant he was—emphasis on idiot. Sighing, she thought, Emphasis
on savant. There were days when she hated the man but she could never disregard
his brilliance.
The
genius in question turned in his seat and she realized he’d turned to meet her eyes.
His expression was interested, maybe even amused. She’d never know
which.
As
suddenly as a heart attack, he whipped around to meet a mac truck slamming into the side of the bus. She braked hard and swerved left to keep from becoming a part of the accident. She still managed to hit a light pole going full speed but the air bags probably saved her life.
The
bus didn’t have air bags. Nothing saved his life; no seat belts, no rollover
bar, no miracles. She got to see the last look on his face.
At
the end, Wilson was the only one she couldn’t tell.
