“Do not go gently into that good night” belongs to Dylan Thomas. I’m only borrowing some of it.
Author’s Notes: I know this has probably been done to death, but I had to. I’m trying to break back into this
fandom.

Sam was out of the car before it came to a full stop and was halfway across the lawn before her husband had even opened
his door. He watched her dash away with a stony expression. He’d never liked the effect Jack had had on her. She lit
up when he was mentioned, though they’d spoken but a few times since their parting. In the end, she would always run
to him.
I’ve gone as far as I can go
Down this road that I know
And the light is starting to fade
I’ve been here before
The door was unlocked. She thanked God. She’d come too far to be stopped by a door, just a door. She ran past friends
she hadn’t seen in months and some that she hadn’t even spoken to in a decade. There would be time for catching
up later, someone, he needed her now. The bedroom seemed so far away and the distance too far to trek. She needed to be where
he was and it seemed as though she never would be. The door was finally in view...within reach. There.
And I go through this door...for you.
Only for you.
She pushed the door open and was overtaken by the darkness of the room, only a weak beam of light seeped in through a crack
between the curtains. The sun was nearly down and time was so short. She took two large steps to his sides and sat down. He
was like an apparition; his skin a sickly grey-ish-blue. He turned away from her. He didn’t want her to remember him
this way.
This road leads nowhere,
Nowhere...
Nowhere, nowhere
But down...
Oh, but down.
She gently grasped his chin and turned his face towards her. Her eyes were wet, but she wouldn’t cry. He didn’t
need her tears. He only wanted her heart. Why had he waited so long?
I’ve been down this road before,
Followed this path that I know
And forgive me for what I must do
She looked into his eyes and could see the barely existent light fading gently. “Do not go gentle into that good
night. Old age should burn and rave at close of day. Rage, rage at the dying of the light.” His eyes slipped away from
her to that light that did die before them both. She watched it, too. Then, she watched him.
But I can’t follow you there
Or go with you then.
For this poison is yours alone.
And you’re too damn far down for me to reach you...
She retook his attention with a touch and begged him silently not to go. There had been so much said and so little done.
She wanted one more moment…just one more. There were tears in his eyes. He didn’t want to cry.
Oh, forgive me...
Forgive me now...
She pressed his hand to her heart and prayed that it would console him. She touched his dying one and found no solace there.
He would in moments leave her and she wasn’t ready. Not nearly.
I love you still...
He left her. Pete opened the door just as his wife became the woman who should’ve been someone else’s.
